Wholesome exercise in the free air, under the wide sky, is the best medicine for body and spirit.
Sarah Arnold, school superintendent in Minneapolis and Boston, who was also a school textbook writer. Her elementary textbooks were very popular during the early 20th century. She also served as president of the American Home Economics Association and the Girl Scouts of America. (1859-1943)
I live in a high rise in downtown Chicago. Three blocks away is Lake Michigan. 30 miles across Lake Michigan is my boyhood home, where I would sit atop a sand dune and, on a clear day, be able to see the Chicago skyline. Lake Michigan has been my best medicine for body and spirit for most of my life. Making the time to walk along its tranquil shoreline in the early morning or late evening provides an instant escape from a busy city and an occupied mind. If you do not already have one, I encourage you to discover your best medicine in nature. - M. J.
