- Thomas Merton, Thomas, Catholic writer and social activist who was a Trappist monk at the Abbey of Gethsemane in Kentucky for 27 years. He is considered the most influential American Catholic author of the 20th century. He was a strong supporter of the nonviolent civil rights and peace movements. In later life, he became very interested in Asian religions. The Dalai Lama said that Merton had a more profound understanding of Buddhism than any other Christian he had known. (1915-1968)
