- Nelson Mandela, South African anti-apartheid leader and politician, who became South Africa’s first black President and served from 1994 to 1999; he was sentenced to life in prison in 1962 for attempting to overthrow the apartheid government, and served 27 years before being released in 1990; he became an international symbol for democracy and social justice and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 (1918-2013)
