This morning I received a text from my 36-year old son, Ryan. No words, just a photo of a smiling 6-year old Haitian boy named Kelly seated on a plane next to his new dad, Sam. Sam and his wife Heidi have been trying to adopt Kelly for a number of years. Bureaucracy led to endless delays in the adoption process. Today, Kelly was finally able to leave Haiti for a new life in Chicago. Imagine what he will experience when his plane lands and he is introduced to things that he hasn’t even had an opportunity to dream about – an incredibly loving family, a home, a new language, a different country and culture, and the hustle-bustle of a large city.
The story of Kelly coming to America today has special meaning to me, because my son played a role in it. The story for me is a “circle of life” kind of story that demonstrates our interdependence on each other. Relationships can forever nurture and connect us to opportunities to do good for one another. Kelly’s mom, Heidi, babysat Ryan when he was a young child. He stayed close to Heidi’s family for the past 30 years, and enjoyed an especially close relationship with Heidi’s mom, Kathy, who sadly died before she could meet her new grandson.
Kathy was a great source of kindness, love, and inspiration to Ryan. When he learned of the adoption struggles, Ryan sought to be of help in the same selfless way that Kathy had always helped him. Ryan contacted a good friend whose mother is the U.S. Ambassador to Haiti. He shared the plight of Kelly and connected Heidi with the Ambassador. Within a short time bureaucratic obstacles disappeared, and today one little boy boarded a plane for a life of endless possibilities.
