Blog: “Adult Playgrounds?”

December 14, 2015

New York City unveiled its first “Adult Playground” in the Bronx in 2010 (watch video). The $200,000 park, in the shadow of Yankee Stadium, features 15 pieces of outdoor exercise equipment.  It has been so popular that dozes of other sites have been developed around the city.  The concept has been popular in China and parts of Europe for a long time.  In the U.S., Los Angeles and San Antonio are two major cities that have led the way.  Los Angeles County has more than 50 adult fitness parks.  San Antonio has created more than 30 since 2010.

Why playgrounds, or "fitness zones”, for adults?  We all know the answer.  We have become a lethargic society of spectators.  Too many of us have disengaged from an active lifestyle.  Instead, we watch others who are engaged - in everything from sports to daily life on reality shows. Add to that, the distraction that comes from the need to be “plugged in”, and you have a recipe for a pretty unhealthy and asocial society.

Fitness “stations” have been a feature of many parks for a long time.  Typically, these stations consist of very simple and inexpensive exercise equipment, e.g. a pull up bar and balance beam.  The new adult playgrounds feature far more advanced equipment that assist in developing strength, increasing aerobic fitness, improving balance and enhancing flexibility.  While your body benefits, your mind and spirit are elevated from being outdoors and sharing a common value (improving your health and wellbeing) with people from many different walks of life - benefitting society as well.  Imagine communities all over America responding to the rally cry “Move More!”, by providing playgrounds where adults of all ages can engage in improving their health – body, mind and spirit!
